Once upon a time, there lived a lion in the forest. As the lion was growing old, he was unable to hunt for his food. He found it more and more difficult to catch his prey. He thought that without food, he will die of starvation. So the lion thought of a plan. He decided to lie down in the cave and pretend that he is ill. And whosoever will come to meet him will become his prey.
Being the king of the jungle, the lion announced he was sick and summoned the animals to come and hear his last will. Not long after this, a foolish rabbit came hopping along. When he came near to the cave he saw the old lion lying there. “How are you today, Mr.Lion?” he asked politely. “Oh!” said Mr. Lion. “I am so sick. Please come in and feel how hot my head is.” The foolish rabbit went into the cave. No sooner had he reached out his paw to feel how hot the lion’s head was when “Snap! Snap!” and that was the end of the foolish rabbit.
When they came to offer him their sympathy, he ate them up one by one.
A few days later, a fox came trotting along. When he came near to the cave he saw the old lion lying there. He stood on the outside of the cave at the respectful distance and asked, “How are you today, Mr. Lion!” he asked politely. “Oh!” said Mr Lion. “I am so sick. Please come in and feel how hot my head is. But why don’t you come inside to meet me,” roared the lion.
The fox replied “No, thank you, Sir! I have noticed that there are many prints of the feet entering your cave but I see no trace of returning. Still, if I come inside, I would be a fool!”
Moral of the story : He is wise who is warned by the misfortune of others.
While seeing how the beasts get in: We do not see how they get out. The inference to be drawn is that the word of the powerful need not be trusted. It is easier to enter the house of a great lord than to get out of it.
Clever people see what happens to others and they walk away from danger.
